If It Beeps Dig It

Determination to Succeed, Take the Gold

Determination to Succeed, Take the Gold

How many times have we heard this? No matter how many its something that indeed does ring true. If you do not dig all the targets you hear while gold detecting you will surely miss gold, guaranteed fact. But when it seems all you are doing is digging trash it can get discouraging after many hours or in some cases many months. If you are new and frustrated  you either need the determination to hang in there, a break or a new goal…not hunting gold nuggets with a metal detector.

Over time you can get to know some noises, especially on your PI (Pulse Induction Detector) unit, call me a nugget head but personally I know the noise of my PI much better than my VLF( Very Low Frequency Detector). The double blip of wire is perhaps the easiest and sometimes you can hear the “hollow” on a bullet casing. But that does not mean that there is not a nugget deeper than these targets and you must first remove them to be able to hear the gold, catch 22. The White’s TDI may be the most advanced detector thus far with target ID once a person learns it.

I admit to having walked away from many a target and have dug just as many others have left behind, we all do it. There are things you can do to put the odds in your favor and dig less and find more. Use a super magnet on your pick yep let the pick grab that ferrous trash. If you are detecting high trash ground clean it before you run your metal detector over it, get a good rake with some super magnets on it and do the prep work. Work in a team, VLFs discriminate much better than PI units so have the PI user mark the targets with poker chips and come behind to discriminate the trash and get the gold.

At the end of the day its all up to you and there are other methods which you can use to put the odd in your favor. Every target is an opportunity to find gold, dig it or leave it for the next guy. It can seem impossible but you just have to hang in there and keep going, it gets easier with time and after the first one they come faster. As always, good luck and happy hunting!
