One of the best gold detectors ever on the market the Minelab SD2100 metal detector has most likely been the most successful metal detector ever produced for gold nugget hunting and nuggetshooting. It has a simplistic yet powerful design and being a pulse induction metal detector it is able to penetrate mineralized ground far better than any VLF detector on the market. Used SD2100 units can be purchased for as little as $700.00 and new ones are still being manufactured today at a cost just under $2,000.00 US with taxes included. The SD2100 is manufactured by Minelab Electronics Pty Ltd out of Australia.

A big advantage in purchasing a Minelab SD2100 Metal Detector is that you will get a detector that is still capable of finding gold nuggets in areas that have been previously detected and the SD2100 is also a first rate machine when it comes to finding new spots as well. A good example of this would be this 22.5 gram gold nugget found by Ron Long of http://www.az-gold.com/ on 5-4-2008. The other big advantage this machine offers you is the ability to use aftermarket coils, batteries and other accessories which in many cases end the need to purchase another unit.

When it comes to depth and sesitivity the Minelab SD2100 is a true contender. Capable of finding large nuggets in excess of 2 feet deep with the right coil coupled with the fact that it can also find gold less than 1/10th of a gram the SD2100 shines. When compared to the GP series units the SD2100 gets less airplane interference and in some areas handles the ground mineralization better. While it is true that the GP series can punch deeper and find smaller gold at depth in most circimstances they also tend to be a little bit more erractic in some aspects depending on model. As you read the metal detecting forums you will see posts on forums the SD2100 forum users always speak highly of the unit.

The best thing you can do to ensure your success as a gold prospector is to learn.

Learning can come from many sources:

1) A club 2) Friends 3) Books 4) Databases 5) Software 6) Online Forums

Lets talk about gold prospecting clubs. A great place for a new prospector to start. Places to legally go and prospect, meetings to ask questions, opportunities to try new prospecting equipment and much more. You should not have any problems getting your money back in gold if the claims are decent and you persist.

Friends can be that extra set of eyes, the objective opinion you need. A partner to go out with and learn with.

Books are full of information. Some good, some not so good. But the more you read the more you learn.

Databases of information can be found online and from various government agencies on CD.

There are a number of companies that make gold prospecting software.

Online forums are a great place to start, ask questions and get answers from veteran gold prospectors.

Don’t forget to get out into the gold fields. Nothing beats filed experience.
